Activist group Change The Ref uses fashion to make powerful statement on student safety and to demand change in the wake of increased school shootings.
NEW YORK, NY - On Sunday, September 9, Change The Ref will take their Back To School Fashion Show on the road, debuting their provocative collection featuring children in bulletproof vests, at New York Fashion Week.
The mobile event, run entirely from a school bus, will kick-off at 12 PM Noon, in the Tribeca neighborhood of New York, amidst the main events surrounding Fashion Week. The group plans to visit various locations throughout Manhattan, drawing from event crowds to amplify their message and demand change.
“I’m going to be very graphic, showing how this system is asking us to dress our kids before going to school, a restaurant, or whatever” said Manuel Oliver, who founded Change The Ref with his wife Patricia, to remember their son Joaquin who was one of the 17 victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting in Parkland, FL on February 14.
The group has launched a twitter account ( @ChangeTheRefBus ) to announce the location of the bus throughout the day and encourages anyone planning to attend their fashion show to follow the account for exact times and locations.
